A House is Not a Home is an ongoing project consisting of a series of photographs exploring interstitial urban spaces. Eric Magassa searches alleys and facades for traces of writing, abstract paintings and fragments of secret messages about dreams and disappointments among Detroit’s hidden stories.

The City of Detroit was declared bankrupt in 2013, with enormous social and economic consequences for its population. Many were forced to leave their homes in search of a livelihood in other cities. At the time,

Magassa received a travel grant to visit Detroit, and the pictures shown at Göteborgs Konsthall belong to a series portraying the city’s gradual decline and emerging visions of the future.
