Göteborgs Konsthall is relocating

Göteborgs Konsthall will be relocating from Götaplatsen to Slakthuset in Gamlestaden. The process will begin in the spring of 2025 and the reopening will take place in 2026. Until then, we will be working on artistic projects and programs to get to know the new neighbourhood.We invite you to follow our journey to Slakthuset!

Göteborgs Konsthall is getting new premises in Slakthuset in Gamlestaden.

Why is Göteborgs Konsthall relocating?

Göteborgs Konsthall has long needed facilities better suited to displaying contemporary art and meeting accessibility requirements, as well as providing a better working environment for staff. Therefore, the Cultural Affairs Committee decided to relocate Göteborgs Konsthall to an existing space in Slakthuset in Gamlestaden. Moving to Slakthuset also offers great potential to develop the institution, providing larger spaces for exhibitions and activities as well as the opportunity to remain open year-round.

Why are we relocating to Gamlestaden?

Slakthuset in Gamlestaden is a dynamic area with several creative businesses. Gamlestaden is in an exciting phase of development and offers new opportunities. Relocating to Slakthuset also means that one of the city’s art institutions will move outside the city centre. This relocation will be an active step in ensuring that art and culture align with the city’s development, reaching and engaging the city’s residents as well as new audiences.

What now?

Utrymning – A Grand Farewell, on Saturday, January 25, was the last public event at Götaplatsen. Now the relocation to Slakthuset in Gamlestaden will begin. While the relocation is underway, Göteborgs Konsthall will be without a venue for a while. Until the reopening, we will focus on the moving project and on artistic projects and programs to get to know our new area.

When will Göteborgs Konsthall open in Slakthuset?

We plan to reopen in Slakthuset in 2026. The exact opening date for the new premises will be announced at a later time.

What will happen to the premises at Götaplatsen?

The premises will be vacated. What happens thereafter is a matter for the property owner, Higab.

What will happen to the staff when Göteborgs Konsthall relocates from Götaplatsen?

Projects and activities will continue in various forms, and collaborations with libraries, arts centres, schools, and artists will be deepened and developed. The staff will also be practically involved in the relocation, planning, reopening, and more. Since Göteborgs Konsthall is relocating to Slakthuset, the staff will need temporary workspaces spaces from the beginning of 2025 until 2026. Temporary workspaces will be set up in the same building as the library in Gamlestaden.
