Göteborgs Konsthall is relocating from Götaplatsen to Slakthuset in Gamlestaden. The reopening will take place on 20 March 2027. Until then, we will be working on artistic projects and programs to get to know the new neighbourhood. We invite you to follow our journey to Slakthuset!
Göteborgs Konsthall is getting new premises in Slakthuset in Gamlestaden.
When will Göteborgs Konsthall open in Slakthuset?
On 20 March 2027, we will open the doors to a new meeting place for contemporary art at Slakthuset in Gamlestaden. The new premises will be more than twice the size of the previous venue, with larger exhibition spaces, an expanded educational studio, and new rooms for public projects and programmes. We look forward to welcoming you there!
The opening date was decided by the Cultural Affairs Committee.
What will the opening exhibition be, and what will happen during the opening weekend?
The opening exhibition will be dedicated to the Danish-Korean artist and filmmaker Jane Jin Kaisen. The exhibition Portal will be her first solo exhibition in Sweden and will present large-scale video works alongside newly produced pieces.
More information about the opening exhibition and the full opening weekend programme will be released closer to the opening date.
Why is Göteborgs Konsthall relocating?
Göteborgs Konsthall has long needed facilities better suited to displaying contemporary art and meeting accessibility requirements, as well as providing a better working environment for staff. Therefore, the Cultural Affairs Committee decided to relocate Göteborgs Konsthall to an existing space in Slakthuset in Gamlestaden. Moving to Slakthuset also offers great potential to develop the institution, providing larger spaces for exhibitions and activities as well as the opportunity to remain open year-round.
Why are we relocating to Gamlestaden?
Slakthuset in Gamlestaden is a dynamic area with several creative businesses. Gamlestaden is in an exciting phase of development and offers new opportunities. Relocating to Slakthuset also means that one of the city’s art institutions will move outside the city centre. This relocation will be an active step in ensuring that art and culture align with the city’s development, reaching and engaging the city’s residents as well as new audiences.
What needs to be rebuilt and renovated at Slakthuset? What is the current status of the construction work, and when will it be completed?
In principle, the entire venue has needed to be rebuilt in order to become functional and meet the organisation’s needs — from a new foundation slab to new walls and additional floor levels.
Follow us on our website and social media channels, where we also share glimpses “behind the scenes”. If everything goes according to plan, we will gain access to the premises at the turn of the year 2026/2027. After that, we will complete the interior fittings, install the first exhibition, and carry out other preparations ahead of the opening.
What does the suspension of the detailed development plan for the Slakthuset area mean for Göteborgs Konsthall?
Göteborgs Konsthall will continue to operate according to plan. Our mission remains unchanged, even though the plans for the Slakthuset area were altered when work on the detailed development plan was suspended at the end of 2025.
We currently hold a temporary building permit valid for ten years from the time we move in. Under current regulations, it is possible to apply for a five-year extension to temporary permits. This gives us a total of 15 years, meaning until 2041. What will happen during those years is not yet known. Work on the development programme may resume, and legislation regarding building permits may change, potentially allowing Göteborgs Konsthall to remain in the area on a long-term basis.
The assessment is that Slakthuset and Gamlestaden remain a strong location for Göteborgs Konsthall to establish itself, even without a detailed development plan. It is an opportunity for us to engage with new audiences and to become part of a district that is growing and changing. Gamlestaden is a large area made up of several parts that need to be better connected. Göteborgs Konsthall can contribute to creating more activity in the area and provide space for encounters between art and audiences.
What is happening now?
The relocation to Slakthuset in Gamlestaden is currently underway. During the relocation process, we will temporarily be without a permanent venue.
Until the opening, we are working on the practical aspects of the move, planning and preparations for the reopening, and organising projects and activities in various formats. Collaborations with libraries, cultural centres, schools, preschools and artists will continue to deepen and develop — all as part of getting to know the new area.
Temporary workspaces for the art hall’s staff have been established in the same building as Gamlestaden Library.
What will happen to the old premises at Götaplatsen?
The premises will be vacated. What happens thereafter is a matter for the property owner, Higab.
